fractured bedrock
Multiple fractures in bedrock, Westmore, VT
(2 -2000). The fractured granite is from the
Devonian Willoughby Pluton which is part of
the Northeast Kingdom batholith ( Ayuso and Arth,1992).
rockfall
In May 2000 a rockfall blocked Route 5A on
the east side of Lake Willoughby (2 -2000).
Click here for the VTrans report on rockfall
hazards.

rockfall
Rockfall, Rte 5, Westmore: the ganite that slid was roughly 18'x14'x4 and weighed 40 tons according to the Caledonia Record, May 19, 2000. (1)

measuring fractures
Shallow dipping (sub horizontal) fractures, Westmore, VT (1-2000)
rockfall
Top of the scar, Westmore, VT (1-2000).
The granite slab that slid onto the highway
was originally situated at the top of the scar
because the lack of tree damage above the
scar indicates that this rockslide did not
initiate farther uphill.
