TNC Regulatory Requirements-Certified Operators

To operate a TNC water system, you must obtain an Operator’s Certificate of the appropriate class. The class required depends on the type of water source and treatment at the system.  See certification requirements page). Most TNCs are Class 1A or 1B systems.

  • Class 1A systems are systems using groundwater sources with no treatment or with only ion exchange for softening or cartridge filters that were not required by the Secretary to be installed. Currently no formal training is required to obtain a Class 1A Certificate. However, we encourage Class 1A operators to attend training.
  • Class 1B systems are systems using groundwater sources with chlorine or ultraviolet light (UV) disinfection. Class 1B operators require three hours of formal training during each three year certification cycle.

To become a Class 1A or 1B certified operator, complete the application Class 1A and 1B operator certification application) and submit it, along with a check for the certificate fee, to the WSD. The fee for a three-year certificate for Class 1A and 1B Certification is $40.00.

TNCs using treatment other than that included in Class 1A or 1B, or surface water or groundwater under the direct influence of surface water (GWUDI) will need an operator with more qualifications. See the Operator Certification and Information page for details.

Vermont Rural Water Association periodically offers regional training classes designed specifically for TNCs.
