Using HYSPLIT as a Puff Dispersion Model

Modeling Point Sources with HYSPLIT

The HYSPLIT model has been used extensively by the Air Division Planning Section as a forward dispersion model to evaluate large point sources of air pollution which are hundreds of kilometers away from Vermont as well as point sources located within or near to the state's boundaries. The Division uses archived wind fields obtained from the National Oceanographic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to model single point sources and multiple source groups. These studies are being done in order to help us quantify potential contributions to aerosol concentrations, acidic deposition, and regional haze in Vermont from sources outside the state. Model results are only preliminary at this time and the modeling approach is still in a testing phase.
