30, 2006 Event - 10th Annual Connecticut River Watershed
Source to Sea Cleanup - Join
hundreds of individuals, clubs, troops, students, and businesses
to clean up the Connecticut River and its tributaries! We
started doing this in 1997 to take care of our favorite local
treasure. The Source to Sea Cleanup is fun and it involves
people of all ages and abilities working together to do something
good for their community. So mark your calendars and we'll
see you on September 30th! More>>
August
26, 2006 Event - Be a BRAT - Get wet in annual cleanup! - Join
the Black River Action Team in the 7th annual RiverSweep
on Saturday, Aug. 26th! From 8am till noon, for the whole
morning or just a half-hour, participate in cleaning up the
bed and banks of the Black River in either Springfield or
Ludlow, VT. Bring your enthusiasm and senses of adventure!
Gloves and trash bags will be provided, along with bottled
water and refreshments; volunteers will each receive a commemorative
tee shirt with a listing of the year's supporters on the
back. Over the years, more than 75 BRAT volunteers have hauled
out dozens of truck-loads worth of household trash, tires,
shopping carts, paint cans, bowling balls, toys, car parts
and other items. The RiverSweep is a fun way to make new
friends while cleaning up our communities. All ages are invited
to participate, groups and families can join in the wet & dirty
fun! To participate in Springfield, meet at the Charter
One Bank drive-up in the Springfield Plaza, by Precision
Pools. To help out in Ludlow, meet at the gazebo on the town
green, near the library. For more information, please contact

in Vermont - The efforts of every day Vermonters
to improve the quality of the state’s waterways are truly
a remarkable community effort. There are more than 160 watershed,
lake and river organizations in Vermont working to improve
water quality and one of them could use your help. Get involved.
Take action to make the water near you a little cleaner, a
little better for fish, wildlife and for yourself. Click

can bring up the entire statewide list.

Clean Water Day - Join us at Burlington’s
ECHO/Leahy Center for Lake Champlain in Burlington on Saturday,
June 10, 2006 at 12 noon to celebrate Vermont Clean Water
Day. We plan to celebrate the good work of Vermonters to
improve water quality around the state and we’ll renew
our commitment to the goal of clean water for all Vermonters.
Gov. Douglas, and members of the Vermont Congressional delegation
and others will be on hand to speak about the importance
of improving water quality in Vermont. More>>

2006 - Request for
Proposals - Feasibility Study for the Control
of Internal Phosphorus Loading in St. Albans Bay (9
pages, 50KB PDF) The Vermont Agency of Natural Resources
is seeking a qualified lake management consultant to compare
treatment options for the control of internal phosphorus
loading in St. Albans Bay, Lake Champlain as to their feasibility,
likelihood of success, environmental impacts, and cost. A
second phase of the study will provide a detailed treatment
design for the chosen alternative and supply most of the
information needed to support the environmental permitting
process for the treatment. A maximum amount of $40,000 is
budgeted for phase 1. Proposals are due August 1, 2006.

Summary - Governor Douglas has released the Clean and Clear
Action Plan's 2005 Annual Report, detailing last year's work
to curb phosphorus pollution and improve water quality in the
Lake Champlain Basin and statewide. (Also

2005 - Agriculture:
New Draft AAP and MFO Rules (on the
Agency of Agriculture Web Site)
- New rules intended to curb pollution from farming activities have
been
proposed
by the
Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets. These
draft rules are expected to take effect in 2006.

Lake Champlain Basin Program - The New
York and Vermont Citizens Advisory Committees for Lake
Champlain
are hosting
public input meetings
in October and November to listen to citizen concerns about Lake
Champlain issues. The meeting results will also help inform the
Lake Champlain Basin Program about residents concerns and provide
a venue for updating the public about the state of Lake Champlain.

6:00-7:00 p.m. for displays /refreshments,
7:00-9:00 p.m. for the meeting
presentation and discussion.

New York meeting in November - TBA
Each meeting will include a 20 minute
presentation by LCBP staff regarding the State of Lake Champlain.
The public is encouraged
to attend the meetings to voice their concerns about lake issues.

of Sediment Phosphorus Concentrations in St. Albans Bay,
Lake Champlain:
Assessment of Internal Loading and Seasonal
Variations of Phosphorus Sediment-Water Column Cycling -
This study was undertaken to determine the current
quantity of phosphorus in the sediments of St. Albans
Bay, and to address the role of seasonal
variations related to changing redox conditions and mineralization
on phosphorus
cycling and mobility in those sediments. See

Volunteer Surface Water Monitoring Guide This
Guide, developed by the VT Dept. of Environmental Conservation
- Water Quality Division, will walk groups and organizations through
the steps of designing
an
appropriate
monitoring
program
for lakes,
streams,
rivers and wetlands. The Guide also celebrates and highlights
past and ongoing efforts of volunteer monitors and their programs
in Vermont. Volunteers
will find a wealth of Vermont-specific resources in this
Guide, as well as resources from national groups
and organizations.

28, 2005 - The Vermont Department of Health has created a new
web site for
posting information on blue-green algae in Lake Champlain. Information
on cell densities, toxin concentrations and whether health alerts
have been posted will be noted on this site, as well as a
telephone number for people wishing to report a bloom or
get
more information. The data on blue-green algal status will be updated
on a weekly basis, including a map view of the lake status.

25 & 26, 2005 - Voices for the Lake at Echo: Exploring Current
Lake Champlain Issues -
ECHO Leahy Center, Burlington,
VT -
Voices for the Lake will explore
current lake issues in a presentation of exhibits, booths,
and roundtable
discussions. The Agency of Natural Resources will be a presenter
