Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps

Effective (currently official) Flood Insurance Rate Maps can be seen at the municipal offices, or found online at the: FEMA Map Service Center www.msc.fema.gov . Telephone: (877) FEMA MAP - which is (877) 336-2627.

Flood Insurance Rate Maps in Vermont are being updated in Chittenden, Washington, and Bennington Counties.

The Chittenden County Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRM) will become effective 7/18/2011. Public meetings will be scheduled to discuss flood insurance options. This is a particularly important time for older structures to get flood insurance. Structures built before the first flood hazard map in your community (typically in the 1980s) and where the new Preliminary DFIRM shows the building to be in a high hazard area (Zone A or AE) for the first time, should get flood insurance before the map change. If the structure now is in a Zone X (low to moderate risk of flooding) then a policy can be established for that zone and will continue in that zone for the life of the policy. This will result in a lower estimate of risk and a lower flood insurance cost. Such a policy, where the zone has been "grandfathered", can be conveyed to future purchasers. Click here for more information on grandfathering. http://www.floodsmart.gov/floodsmart/pages/flooding_flood_risks/grandfathering.jsp Chittenden County Preliminary DFIRM maps are posted on this website.

The Washington County Preliminary DFIRM has not yet received a letter of final determination. When the letter is released it will set a date six months out when the maps will become effective. As such, the maps are not likely to become effective until at least September 2011.

Bennington County now has a new Preliminary Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) (1/14/2011) available for review. The DFIRM panels are available at the municipal offices and are posted on this web site - see the links below.

Communities should review the Preliminary DFIRM and Flood Insurance Study and identify any needed corrections before the end of the review and appeal period this spring. If you have any questions about the maps or study please contact Ned Swanberg at VT DEC ned.swanberg@state.vt.us before submitting comments.

After the review period, FEMA will respond to the communities regarding how their corrections were handled and issue a letter of final determination.
