State of Vermont Press Release October 01, 2012 Through the Agency’s investigation, it was determined that the wastewater system serving the Laporte’s rental unit failed. In an attempt to fix the failure, they excavated and removed the main trunk line of the existing leachfield and installed an extended leachfield pipe. They did not apply for or receive a permit prior to this new construction. In response to Agency directives, the Laportes subsequently applied for and received a Wastewater Permit in December 2011, authorizing construction of a new wastewater disposal system. Construction of the system was completed as of July 2012. After the investigation was completed the Laportes were notified of the violation and agreed to settle the matter. The settlement was reduced to an Assurance of Discontinuance, and adopted as an order by the Environmental Court. In it, the Laportes agreed to pay a $6,750.00 penalty.
