Town of Brandon

Agency of Natural Resources Secretary Elizabeth McLain today announced that the Enforcement Division has formally settled an environmental violation involving the Town of Brandon regarding its wastewater treatment facility. The settlement includes a $7,000 supplemental environmental project.

The wastewater treatment facility includes two oxidation ditches which are utilized in the treatment process. One is used all the time and the other is off-line and empty except during periods of high flows. The Town of Brandon notified the Agency that on three separate occasions during high flow events in 2002, the second oxidation ditch was not utilized. The failure to utilize the secondary oxidation ditch during these time periods was the result of equipment maintenance and operational issues, and was a violation of the facility discharge permit.

On March 3, 2004, Brandon town voters supported a $550,000 bond issue to support the renovation of the Wastewater Treatment Facility.

The Town of Brandon agreed to settle the matter with an Assurance of Discontinuance, adopted as an order by the Environmental Court on May 21, 2004. In it, the Town of Brandon agreed to come into compliance with the discharge permit and fund a $7,000 supplemental environmental project.
