Consulting Engineers

The qualifications, experience, fees and availability of engineers may vary considerably. It is, therefore, important that a dam owner seek proposals from several engineers and carefully explore their qualifications and experience related to dams of the type and size under consideration, as well as their fees and availability, before making a selection.

Additional information may be found in the brochure, Dam Ownership - Procuring the Services of a Professional Engineer (579 kb), published by the Association of State Dam Safety Officials. The brochure lists several important attributes a prospective engineer should have. For projects in Vermont, they can be stated as:

• Be a Vermont licensed professional engineer;
• Have a minimum of 10 years experience in dam design and construction;
• Possess a knowledge of Vermont dam statutes and permitting requirements;
• Have specific experience in the problem area, such as hydrology, hydraulics, structural or geotechnical engineering.

The engineering consulting firms listed below have experience with dam design, construction or reconstruction. It is not meant to be an exhaustive list. DEC does not intend to imply a certification of those on this list, nor for the work they may perform. This list is meant to provide a resource to dam owners who require the services of Vermont licensed professional engineers experienced with dams. Firms are listed alphabetically.
