Press Release

February 04, 2002
Greensboro Fire District #1

WATERBURY - Agency of Natural Resources Secretary Scott Johnstone today announced that the Agency's Enforcement Division has formally settled an environmental violation involving Greensboro Fire District #1, which owns and operates a public water supply in Greensboro. The settlement includes two supplemental environmental projects that total $3,000.

Through an investigation, the Agency discovered that Greensboro Fire District #1 had failed to develop and install a treatment system according to a temporary operating permit issued in 1997. The district had also failed to submit monthly reports in accordance with state regulations.

The matter came to light as a result of regulatory review by the Water Supply Division. After the investigation was completed, Greensboro Fire District #1 was notified of the violations and agreed to settle the matter.

The settlement was reduced to an assurance of discontinuance and was so ordered by the Environmental Court on January 29. In it, Greensboro Fire District #1 agreed to submit a source evaluation plan, submit a source application and develop a new water source in accordance with regulations. The district also agreed to fund two supplemental environmental projects at $1,500 apiece.
