State of Vermont Press Release April 01, 2004 Through the Agency's investigation, it was discovered that the Brattleboro Salvage Company, Inc. failed to submit accurate quarterly reports and as a result underpaid franchise taxes. From 1999 to 2001 it avoided paying $248,070 in solid waste franchise taxes. The matter came to light as a result of the Agency’s routine regulatory review. The settlement was reduced to an assurance of discontinuance and was so ordered by the Environmental Court on March 24, 2004. In it, Brattleboro Salvage Company, Inc. agreed to comply with state requirements and pay a $12,000 penalty to the State of Vermont. It also agreed to pay $327,388 to the Vermont Tax Department for the avoided franchise taxes and interest. These payments total $339,388.
