State of Vermont Press Release February 13, 2006 A diesel fuel release occurred from a badly corroded fuel tank located at the town garage. Through the Agency's investigation, it was discovered that the tank was used to fuel school busses, but was not permitted. The matter came to light as a result of a citizen complaint about a strong petroleum odor and the presence of petroleum in an unnamed tributary of the Clyde River, immediately adjacent to the garage. The Town of Charleston immediately took steps to mitigate the release. It has since worked cooperatively with the Agency on the clean up and agreed to settle the matter. The settlement was reduced to an Assurance of Discontinuance and was so ordered by the Environmental Court on February 8, 2006. In it, the Town of Charleston agreed to continue its efforts toward remediation of the site, in accordance with state regulations. It was also agreed to fund a $5,500 supplemental environmental project. Involved Program: Underground Storage Tank Program, Waste Management Division of the Department of Environmental Conservation |
