Household Hazardous Waste In addition to oil, tires, batteries, and antifreeze, automobiles require many other products during repairs and routine maintenance. Examples of additional maintenance include brake repairs, carburetor cleaning, and addition of dry gas (fuel additives), car cleaning, and bodywork. These products used to do this maintenance pose several hazards to humans and the environment, as well as storage and handling difficulties. Hazards: These products contain a wide variety of potential environmental and human hazards. For example, brake fluid, which is used to ease the pressure required to apply the brakes, can become contaminated with dirt and metal particles. This fluid then needs to be changed. Ethylene glycol is the main ingredient in brake fluid. If ingested it can cause organ and brain damage and possibly death. An engine’s carburetor, which controls the fuel and air mixture in a motor, may become clogged with debris and require cleaning. Carburetor cleaner is a strong corrosive, which can cause burns and blindness in the event of exposure. Over time, water may condensate in the gas tank causing problems when fuel levels are low. This usually requires the addition of dry gas. Dry gas contains Isopropyl alcohol, which can cause eye damage and is extremely flammable. To protect a cars paint finish from the sun and weather, waxes are often applied to provide a protective layer. These waxes and polishes are toxic if ingested and can cause death to humans and animals. Some of these products are flammable, posing storage and handling problems. Storage and Disposal:
