Waste Prevention

Waste prevention is a simple concept: If you create less waste, you consume fewer resources. Ultimately you will pay less to recycle or throw materials away.

“Waste prevention” or “source reduction” means reusing things (instead of buying new stuff) and reducing the amount of what is used. For example, a company practices waste prevention when it reduces the amount of material it uses to package its product.

The State of Vermont in its Solid Waste Management Plan defines Waste Prevention as: The design, manufacture, purchase or use of materials (such as products and packaging) to reduce the amount and toxicity of waste generated.
