Sites Management Section The UniFirst Plant in Williamstown was an industrial dry cleaning facility from 1973 until the mid-1990s. The plant then became a collection and distribution center. It shut down entirely in 2007 and has been vacant since. In late 2010 the building was inspected for lead, asbestos, and residual cleaning solvents. The building has been demolished with only the foundation and cement floor slab remaining. The UniFirst Corporation remains the property owner and is still responsible for all ongoing site monitoring and remediation. Groundwater contamination exists on site and on neighboring properties. This site is managed by the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) under the terms of a 1997 Consent Decree signed by the Town of Williamstown, State of Vermont, and UniFirst (formerly Interstate Uniform). Regular air, groundwater, surface water, and water supply well monitoring, groundwater treatment, and operation of indoor air mitigation systems are currently performed to protect human health and the environment. Past activities included soil excavation, supply well closure, installation of waterlines, installation of an area drainage pipe system, and construction of a dedicated water treatment plant. In response to ongoing public interest we have established this web page to present the most recent as well as historic information to the public. We have made every effort to include accurate information. The reader is encouraged to review any referenced sources for further information. Please check this site for periodic information updates. The reports that were previously avaible through theis webpage are now hosted on the Waste Management Interactive Database (WMID).
