Where to Reuse and Recycle your Computers, Televisions, and other Electronics.   January 2009

Vermont solid waste districts are your first resource for local reuse and recycling information. Use the following list for contact information on districts and local businesses that provide a reuse and/or recycling option for your computer and for links to national programs.   (The options are listed alphabetically.)

Consider reuse before recycling working electronic devices.  Donate your working applicances, electronics, or anything with a plug to a reuse organization.  Check with your local solid waste district for businesses in your area.

Why Recycle Computers and Televisions?

  • Computer monitors and television picture tubes are a type of devise known as a cathode ray tube or CRT. The glass used to manufacture CRTs contains lead in high enough concentrations to exceed hazardous waste limits.
  • Because waste CRTs are produced by a large number and wide variety of consumer and businesses sources, waste CRTs are not exclusive to a specific industry, and they present a relatively low-risk compared to other hazardous wastes, Vermont recently added CRTs to its list of universal wastes. As a universal waste, CRTs can be managed according to the flexible and streamlined universal waste standards (in lieu of managing them as hazardous waste).

The CRT universal waste standards are contained in subchapter nine of the Vermont Hazardous Waste Management Regulations which became effective on October 15, 2006.

Close the Loop & Buy a Green Computer -- - use the EPEAT tool
EPEAT is a system to help purchasers in the public and private sectors evaluate, compare and select desktop computers, notebooks and monitors based on their environmental attributes. EPEAT also provides a clear and consistent set of performance criteria for the design of products, and provides an opportunity for manufacturers to secure market recognition for efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its products.
