Vermont Materials Management Plan

Effective June 18, 2014

The Materials Management Plan (MMP) is the new name for the State Solid Waste Plan.

The sustainable materials management strategy focuses on using materials throughout the entire life cycle of a product or material with the intent of preventing overall waste, increasing reusability, and increasing recycling and organics diversion. The benefits of managing materials sustainably extend far beyond the field of solid waste to influence local economic development, support the desire for a working landscape, and decrease Vermont's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that contribute to climate change.

"Materials management is an approach to serving human needs by using and reusing resources most productively and sustainably throughout their life cycles, minimizing the amount of materials involved and all the associated environmental impacts."

Final Version of Vermont MMP

The Materials Management Plan has completed the review process and has been approved and signed by the Legislative Committee on Administrative Rules (LCAR). The plan is effective as of June 18th, 2014. Within the next year, all Solid Waste Management Entities (including solid waste districts, alliances, and towns) must submit a Solid Waste Implementation Plan (SWIP) that aligns with the requirements of the state-wide MMP. SWIPs must be submitted to and approved by ANR Solid Waste Program by June 18th, 2015.
