New symbols for Recycling, Food Scraps and Trash on bins   Universal Recycling Symbols

Vermont's Agency of Natural Resources (ANR) is proud to unveil the newly developed standardized symbols for recycling, food scraps, and trash. These symbols will unify recycling and composting efforts across Vermont so that no matter where one recycles or composts in Vermont, they will see the same symbols. These symbols were created as tools to help implement Vermont's Universal Recycling law (Act 148). Act 148, passed by the Vermont Legislature in 2012, bans all recyclables from landfills by July 2015 and food scraps by July 2020. This will help Vermont's recycling and composting rate increase from 30% to 60%.

Vermont is taking a big step in helping to promote consistency in messaging for materials management nationally by adopting these colors and images for statewide use. The designs are similar to those being used by major cities, such as San Francisco and Seattle. Vermont's standardized recycling, food scraps, and trash symbols were conceived by an Act 148 work group comprised of solid waste management entities, non-profit organizations, businesses, and state agencies. Final symbol designs were created in partnership with the Chief Marketing Office of the Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development.

These symbols should be used by businesses, haulers, solid waste management entities, schools, and anywhere that source separation occurs. They can be used on containers, outreach materials, totes, trucks, and more. The preferred order is recycling, food scraps, then trash. Consult with your solid waste management entity about locally available resources.

Which image file type should I use?

PNG

This image type allows for transparency, which means that when you download it, there will not be a white background filling in the negative space. Use .PNG for making print graphics and for use in projects where the image will be edited multiple times. Also compatible for web use.

Note: This file will open up in a new window or tab in your internet browser. You can copy & paste the image, or save the file to your computer from here.

PNG-ZIP "Zip" is a special name for a compressed file. Use the .zip option to download the image directly to your computer.
JPG A good option for the web, as it is formally recognized by all browsers. JPG images do not respond well to frequent re-sizing and editing, so be mindful of how much the image will be manipulated. These are larger images that will do well on large posters and signs.
JPG-ZIP For direct download to your computer.
PDF Portable Document Format (PDF) are single documents that can be viewed or printed easily on all computer types with Adobe Reader (available for free download here). They are stand-alone documents that cannot be embedded in common programs like Microsoft Word, Excel, PPT, basic paint applications, etc. PDFs are a good option for sign-making and printing.
For multiple symbol downloads Use the drop-down menu to download multiple symbols at once directly to your computer. All of the symbol image files in a "package" will be downloaded in one folder to your hard drive.
